Reflections

Although ultimately this car wasn't used it was very instrumental in this project. Getting this car set in motion a sequence of events that lead to getting the genuine car that would not have happened had I not got this car. The car served as my daily driver through this entire project and donated many components towards the restoration of the real deal.

The Clone Phase

Having a car now I set out on the research and acquiring parts. For starters I created three lists; CHP Accessories, Restoration, and Conversion (upgrades to the Dodge parts of the car). By now I have already acquired plenty of pictures of different restored cars and there were differences in the type and placement of the equipment so I knew it was time to call on the experts.

In doing research I noticed that Ron Hurwitz's name was one that continued to dominate the position of expert on the 69 CHP cars. In that information I had a way to contact Ron as I didn't want to wait five months to the next show. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a response to my email stating my intentions to build a 69 CHP clone.

Ron was upfront about not liking clones but felt I was planning on keeping it as accurate as feasibly possible. Two months later we met and talked in detail, I also had the opportunity to look through his restoration albums. From then on we were exchanging emails about part numbers, equipment brands, model numbers, etc.

In January of 2010 I answered a listing on Craigslist for Polara parts. In talking with the seller I was able to conclude he was listing parts from an old CHP car (could have been a normal police cruiser) but he was adamant about the car being crushed and was sure about it, oh well on with the clone.

By now I have enrolled in the auto body class at the local community college so I could get the car cleaned up. By the end of the semester I had most of the rust repair taken care of and was already planning of taking the class again in the fall to continue.

Throughout the last five months I had been collecting parts and accessories on all three lists.
