4948

October 28, 2010

Today I thought I’d take a break from talking about the restoration and talk about the car.

The 1969 CHP Polara held the record on the Chrysler test track in Chelsea, MI for highest top end achieved by a factory-built 4 door sedan (149.6 mph). The 1969 Polara was the fastest police sedan ever produced by a vehicle manufacturer with speeds reported by officers of 160-170 mph.

Unit 4948 started life at the Belvedere, IL factory on May 30, 1969 and was put in service August 19, 1969 in the Fresno area. Sixteen months later it was put up for sale on December 22, 1970. The family that purchased the car had a history of buying retired CHP cars. They used this car over the next ten years till the transmission started giving them issues and it was parked in 1980.

They were not looking to sell the car but when I came along they saw an opportunity to see the car get the attention that it deserved. The time with this family is as much a part of its history as the time with the CHP and I’m just the next chapter.

In time I hope to learn more about its time in the CHP and maybe learn who the officer was that drove it.
